Does our old calendar need an upgrade?

Is our calendar perfect? Far from it. The number of days in each month are uneven, its quarters are unequal, and it's impossible to determine when on which day any random date will fall.

But it turns out, there are many, many other - arguably better - ideas to reform it.

For instance, there's the 13-Moon Calendar. Inspired by the ancient Mayan Long-Count calendar, this proposal to reform the current Gregorian calendar re-names all the months, and introduces other innovations, including an extra month, which approximates many ancient calendars.

The Symmetry454 Calendar is a proposal by a Toronto university professor. It features four exactly equal quarters of 28-, 35- and 28-day months, making it easier to compare fiscal quarters. It's beautiful symmetry contrasts with the chaotic Gregorian.

The 13-month "Sol" Calendar updates an Old Idea - the 13-month year tied to the lunar cycle. This calendar's 13 months are all 28 days long, making it easy to remember the length of months. A leap year is added to the last month, December, and a new month, Sol, is added between June and July.

The New Earth Calendar is a bit of a hybrid - mixing the best elements of proposals like the Symmetry454 calendar and the 13 months of the Sol calendar.

Finally, the 30x11 Calendar is what its creator calls a "Gentle Update" of our current calendar. All of its months are 30 days long, except December, which rounds out the 365 or 366-day year with 35 or 36 days. It makes it incredibly easy to determine what day number each day on the calendar holds, and makes it easy to remember days.

The Abbott ePublishing Tyndale 21 Version of the Gospels is a revision of the 1536 translation of the New Testament Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) done by William Tyndale, who was a pioneer in the translation of the Christian scriptures into the English language.

Much of his turns of phrases and word creations (like the word "beautiful") have come into our language as a result of his translation - an effort that cost him his life, by burning at the stake, in 1536, because he dared to put the scriptures into the hands of the people, and in their own language.

Below is a well-known and popular section of the Gospel of Matthew, the Beatitudes. Tyndale, using the original Greek manuscripts known to him at the time, and previous English attempts at translation such as the Wycliffe version of the 1400s, puts his own stamp on this beautiful scene.

Much of what he wrote was used word-for-word by the compilers of the King James Version in 1611, 80 years later:

When he saw the people, he went up onto a hill. And when he was seated, his disciples came to him.

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, because they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.

Abbott ePublishing announces the publication of the Abbott ePublishing Tyndale21 Version of the New Testament Gospels, an updated, modern English version of the first printed English Gospels translated by William Tyndale in 1526.

Also known as the Abbott ePublishing Version, this is the first stage of a proposed full New Testament revision of the New Testament translation made by William Tyndale in1526.

The electronic book is being sold for $2.99 on the company’s website,www.abbottepub.com/tyndale21gospels.html in Adobe Portable Document format (.pdf.) The eBook contains the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

General editor and Abbott ePublishing principal Stephen Abbott says the new version is not a "translation," but rather an update of the 16^th Century text that Tyndale produced.

"It was a remarkable and important text in the history of translations,” said Abbott. “It was the first New Testament printed in English, it laid the foundations and gave much of the familiar wording to the King James Version of 1611, and was the first English Bible to be translated directly from the Greek language.”

All the English Bibles up until that time had been translations from the Latin Vulgate, but Tyndale's New Testament was taken from the compilation of all Greek manuscripts known at that time.

The scholars who created the King James Version of the Bible in 1611 relied heavily on Tyndale's translation. Some estimate that nearly 83 percent of the King James Version New Testament contains Tyndale’s wording.

“His renderings are unique and sometimes more starkly beautiful than many, many that have come after, as will be readily seen in this translation,” said Abbott ePublishing

Tyndale’s early 16^th Century language is updated in this edition for 21^st Century ears.

"The thought, ‘What if William Tyndale’s 1526 version was the only one Christians had used for the last 400 years, and it now needed to be updated into more modern English?’ was constantly considered,” said Abbott. “It was, in fact, the theoretical basis for this revision. Words and phrases that have clearly changed meaning were updated to 21^st Century English.

The Abbott ePublishing Tyndale21 Version is not a word-for-word update of Tyndale’s translation, and discretion was used when called for, he said.

"This is neither a ‘thought-for-thought’ nor ‘word-for-word’ rendering of the Gospels from ancient Greek texts,” he said. “It is instead an adaptation of an earlier English translation. Phrases are not deliberately put into over-casual speech. The majesty, dignity and grace of the English of Tyndale’s era remain.”

In this truly inspiring book, Dr. Alexis Carrel lays out his vision for the future, one in which everyone achieves their own destiny in a morally uplifting society that's designed to uplift the human spirit and nurture the human body.

He had everything going for him. He had a great job in Chicago in which his scientific genius was put to work with the likes of Charles Lindbergh, which he created the first heart profusion pump (artificial heart) in the early days of the 20th Century. He worked on amazing projects like keeping a chicken alive for decades by replacing and rejuvenating its cellular structure.

Using a small needle and very fine silk thread, he had developed the first successful technique for suturing blood vessels together, for which (along with his groundbreaking work on organ and blood transplantation) he won the 1912 Nobel prize in medicine.

But when World War Two broke out, he, being a patriotic Frenchman, returned to France. He returned to where he had grown up and, during World War One, had gone straight to the front lines, where he put his genius to work with Henry Dakin to create the Carrel-Dakin Method, an antiseptic treatment of wounds consisting of regular intermittent irrigation through surgically placed rubber tubes to avoid infection in contaminated wounds and to hasten healing.

He returned to France just before the German invasion and occupation of his homeland, and remained in the unoccupied southern part of France, where the government there was allowed to continue under the watchful eyes of the Germans, who ran the north and west of the country.

Carrel created a foundation there that would study human problems and seek solutions to them so society could advance and individuals could lead healthier, more productive (and happy) lives. After the war, he was, briefly, accused of collaborating with the Nazis (as was half of France) but was acquitted of all charges just before his death, brought on by stress, in 1944.

He was a man of great contradictions - a man of science who believed in the miracle cures of Lourdes, and a deeply devoted Catholic with morally conservative views who was devoted equally, perhaps, to science and dramatic change, if necessary, to advance society and preserve the human race. He had just finished a work encompassing all of these contradictions when he died.

In the early 1950s, his wife Anne had his unedited and unfinished work published as "Reflections on Life." This 2011 edition, titled "A Scientist Reflects on Life and Society," is that work, and it is perhaps one of the most beautifully written testimonies to the determination of the human race to survive and thrive ever written.

Out of print for decades, this newly-edited work will surely have an impact in today's conflicted and troubled world.

I first noticed my special sense when I was 12. The vision of a dog’s wail was like a wave washing over me. I was in my front yard and quickly called my mutt Fido. But as he ran to me, I heard the simultaneous clang of the trolley’s bell and the wail of my neighbor’s dog, Ralphie.

My eyes shot to the street, and thankfully, Ralphie had only had his tail sliced through by the trolley’s wheels. We renamed him “Lucky.”

The incidents continued throughout my youth. A person’s laugh in the cinema, the breaking of a glass, a horse throwing a shoe - I saw them all, seconds before they happened. I kept this all to myself.

One morning, I saw the newspaper headline and my father’s cry of outrage in my head even before I had made it down the stairs to the breakfast table. We were all shocked and angered by the sinking of the Lusitania, and soon, we were at war, and I was a doughboy, headed to France.

The journey was rough, and I was sick. Seeing myself sick in advance was not helpful, nor pleasant. We were marched to the front, and we relieved a weary division of Frenchmen who were at once happy to see us and resentful of the “Yanks” who, we were told, thought we knew everything.

One morning, as I was making my way through the labyrinth of trenches to deliver a message to a French general, the sense came over me, though it was at first unclear what was to happen. I entered a room carved into the trenches and the hair on my neck bristled. As I began to make my way down the stairs, I quickly turned, grabbed my colleague, and yelled “Get down!,” pushing him to the ground. Just then, the room erupted in fire as a shell hit from the ceiling, crushing several underneath the rubble.

As word of the incident, and my role in it, spread, I was taken to another hand-carved room along the trenches - “To await interrogation,” I was told by my French guard. The tall, arrogant French officer who soon arrived demanded to know what had happened, and why I had foreseen it. Was I a spy? I was asked. No, I replied, as I sat before him.

His long sword seemed wildly out of place in the trenches, and I saw a blurred vision of it knocking a glass from the table in front of me. As he turned, it happened, and I reached out to grab it before it fell.

He was stunned. My hands were bound behind me in the chair, and a French soldier hit me in the stomach. “Did you see that coming?” he said. “Yes,” I replied, “But I could do nothing to stop it.”

Just then, I saw another vision, and was pleased at the face I thought I recognized in the haze. “This will soon be all sorted out,” I said. “The general himself is arriving.”

“What general?,” the officer snarled, just as he looked up to see the door open with a sweating aide-de-camp exclaiming something hurriedly in French.

Following the now stiffly saluting aide was General “Black Jack” Pershing himself, who had heard of my heroics and was concerned for my welfare. The general and I soon left the room, and after a celebratory drink with him I will never forget, I was sent back to my comrades with a story I was accused of making up.

But evidence soon followed. My comrades were amazed at the lieutenants and captains who made daily trips to my division, asking for my pre-cognitions of their units’ fates. I couldn’t help them, of course, since the vision only happened to things and people around me, not in their divisions, miles away. The visits slowed.

Then one day, as I prepared to go on a raid of the enemy’s position, another captain arrived with some foolish question or another. Just then, I had the most powerful vision I had ever seen. The captain saw the changed look on my face, and asked what I had just seen.

I told him, “I am about to go over the top, and my right arm is going to be blown to bits,” I said. “And you are going to be hit by a shell and be killed where you stand.”

And you know what? I was right again.

MANCHESTER, NH - Abbott ePublishing, a Manchester New Hampshire-based publisher of electronic books, launched Tuesday, March 24, with the goal of offering “affordable, interesting eBooks” and competing with high-priced online eBook retailers.

Founded by Stephen Abbott, a public relations consultant, former newspaper reporter and writer, the new publishing house, which can be found online at www.abbottepub.com, seeks to offer inexpensive eBooks in various formats.

Abbott ePublishing will give readers an affordable way to access electronic books, said Abbott.

“In a recession, people don’t have the money for a $15 or $20 book, and surely don’t have that kind of money for an eBook,, which carries few of the costs of electronically produced books,” said Abbott. “Abbott ePublishing offers books for under $10, and most for far less.”

The average price of an eBook on the site is currently around $4, he said.

“The launch of Abbott ePublishing comes at a time when the price of eBooks offered at major online retailers are rising, some to well over $15,” said Abbott. “That’s simply not the way for publishers to endear themselves to the reading public.”

The publisher launches with over 30 electronic book titles, in subjects as varied as Business & Money, Fiction & Literature, History, Humor, Inspiration & Self Improvement, Philosophy, Politics & Current Affairs, Religion & Spirituality, Science & Technology and Travel & Travel Essays.

Abbott ePublishing is currently seeking authors of eBooks in these subject areas. Authors receive a royalty rate of fifty percent of the sale price of their eBook. “That’s a greater royalty than nearly any other publisher, on or off-line,” said Abbott.

The debut line-up includes two books from the publishing house’s first signed fiction author, George Polley of Sapporo, Japan, who has written two books of animal short stories based loosely on Japanese folklore.

Abbott has also authored some eBooks that will be offered on the site, including a business book, “Hot Jobs for a Cold Economy: Service Businesses You Can Start for Little Cash” (to be published on April 15) and what he calls a “slightly off-the-wall book” of humorous sayings and quotations about Abraham Lincoln.

Most books on the site are offered in both Adobe .pdf (Portable Document Format) and mobipocket formats.
